Dublin Road
Andy McHugh
The former site of a burger restaurant, the location chosen for this sculpture is on Belfast's 'Golden Mile'. This stretch of city centre restaurants and bars has undergone constant redevelopment for many years, but has lately lost some of its shine.
The sculpture is a reaction to the ongoing struggle between fly posters and city authorities. Neither for or against either of these two competing forces, it simply draws attention to this city space and similar contested areas across the city, which collectively exert an tangible aesthetic impact. The interference to the fly posters challenges the garish, crude nature of the medium, and highlights the weakness of the stance taken by the authorities on the solution to this bombardment of counter culture.
