Tomb Street Car Park

Once part of Sailor Town - Belfast's docklands and its hinterland - the public carpark and concrete overpass have entirely erased any evidence of what used to stand here. The tarmac and bridge supports frame glimpses of the surrounding streets, and a space where shades of the past might be channelled.

The tensions buried in the vanished streets come to life in a sculpture that echoes the form of a lifebelt, and which wrestles with itself, trying to hold on to a coherent form. In this struggle, the sculpture remakes itself in different materials - stone, iron and water - as if hoping to find an stable element in which it can rest.
